Alex Lo, a South China Morning Post columnist who is a reliable shill for government interests (and was admiringly quoted in the New York Times by Thomas Friedman, an idiot) calls for a total closure of the MTR to punish people for protesting.https://www.scmp.com/comment/opinion/article/3031775/shut-down-mtr-until-further-notice …

It's an open secret in Hong Kong that at this point mass transit closures, tear gas, and mall closings are being used strictly to punish the population. (The mall closings matter because they are quasi-public spaces and often the only convenient route for pedestrians in transit)

This weekend a bunch of playgrounds, parks and public spaces were also padlocked. The closures spark physical retaliation against subway entrances, which is then used as a pretext for further closings. They help to unite Hong Kongers, but not in the direction the authorities want

The guy who wrote this column calling for the MTR to be shut down lives in Canada, a sad example of foreign interests attempting to meddle in internal Chinese affairs.

The chief threat to passengers and MTR staff has come from triad thugs who attacked people on July 21 while police did nothing, and from police who rampaged through a station on August 31. In an amazing coincidence, you can find those dates spraypainted on a lot of MTR entrances
