As @stegersaurus pointed out, large public spaces and even walkways in the city have been closed today by order of the government. None were damaged or even targeted last night; it's simply a way to ruin people's Saturday and create an atmosphere of crisis

It's hard to find language to convey the situaton to fellow Americans. "Imagine if NYC shut down the entire subway system on a weekend. Okay, wait. Imagine if the subway normally worked—really worked. Yeah, even the G train. Every 3 minutes... What's that? You can't imagine it?"
