This is some level 99 linguistic taunting going on around me all the time that I can't see. Sometimes @maryhui lifts the veil a tiny bit and it is invariably wonderful. In this case, the sign belongs to a popular baked goods chain whose plutocrat owner is vocally pro-Beijinghttps://twitter.com/maryhui/status/1180349128133365762 …

For non-Chinese speakers: 西 means west; together with the next character 餅 it means western baked goods. With the 門 radical spraypainted around it, it's transformed into 閪, cunt. A cop yelled 自由閪 "freedom cunt" at a protester; protesters have reclaimed the insult. https://twitter.com/rachel_cheung1/status/1180345817170767872 …

It feels like anything I ask about has an answer like this: "oh yeah, that's a pun because 'banana' in Cantonese sounds like riot helmet, plus they put in the character for weasel. Also it's an allusion to six classical Chinese poems and a popular Cantopop song from the sixties"

Meanwhile, never forget what attempt at propaganda the mainland authorities lobbed at us foreign English speakers like a cultural hand grenade in Augusthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVQTA34NKP0 …

Dying to read the essay about how Cantonese language was weaponized in the defense of Hong Kong, and mainland China's linguistic chauvinism used as an effective shield against influence operations, infiltration on online forums and among frontliners in person

I wrote this and @jmulich pointed me to this lovely thread by @maryhui a while ago. But I want the other half of this story too—how the mainland's linguistic blindness about the diversity of Chinese makes them less good at oppressionhttps://twitter.com/maryhui/status/1154093412330557441 …

[Thread]: How is Cantonese a language of protest? I had a ton of fun sharing some of my thoughts on this panel tonight (very aptly, in Cantonese—my first time doing public speaking in Canto). For those who couldn't make it, here's a digest. 1/ https://twitter.com/hongkongpen/status/1153821484130824193 …

A classic book on this topic is 中文解毒(Detoxing Chinese) by Wan Chin, but unfortunately is written in Chinese. Because even most of us are unaware of the political effects of “communist Chinese”.
