Many news stories about Hong Kong mention that residents make barking noises at police (since cops are "dogs" in local slang). This leaves out an important detail: they don't make big dog barking noises, but tiny lap dog yipping noises. The population here is absolutely savage

I feel bad for the Hong Kong police. Some of the cops are just sadists, but there are many regular cops who have been conscripted into riot control and now suffer the consequences. A city needs a police force, but they are now so hated it's not clear how the HKPF can recover.

It's hard to watch the police in action here and see anything but a total failure of leadership. This is true both at the police level (aimless thuggery; routinely putting officers into scary situations) and at the government level. Carrie Lam has selfishly sacrified the HKPF

this may not be a popular opinion round these parts but i do feel some sympathy for the rank and file on the ground. getting pressed from above and subject to endless waves from hatred on the ground? can't be easy for them. please no shoot kids though thx

I think they're in a terrible position. Being the target of hate for seventeen weeks because the leadership is hiding behind you is an awful situation. That does not excuse the acts of violence, of course, but I think it is important to recognize
