This wonderful time lapse shows a textbook Hong Kong protest. Note the no-man's-land between cops and protesters, the umbrellas, the total lack of reaction to tear gas, and the eventual decision by the police to charge 100 meters, which disperses the demonstrators.https://twitter.com/shelzhang/status/1179365678882709507 …

The bridge makes it visible just how much tear gas the police fire. Imagine this happening over and over in a residential high-rise neighborhood. The gas has zero effect on front line demonstrators (who wear masks and goggles) but really affects residents. It's strictly punitive

It's also important to point out that demonstrators don't scatter because they are physically afraid of the police, but because they don't want to be arrested. Hong Kong's anti-riot laws mean you could do a decade of hard time for protesting like this. And yet people protest.

The only thing missing from this time lapse to make it a canonical 2019 Hong Kong protest is zip-tied metal barricades, a fire started in the gap, journalists in the way, and a big laser battle between protesters using laser pointers and police with high-intensity strobe lights
