Massive, happy rally tonight right at the foot of the PLA garrison Hong Kong (the bright building with unclimbable walls). It is the 5th anniversary of the 2014 umbrella revolutionpic.twitter.com/E6EXC8WqaC

It was impossible to get to this rally without stepping on Xi Jinping's face. People didn't seem to mind.pic.twitter.com/2PCGsBiwoU

It was an emotional evening! When the protests five years ago ended, people said "we'll be back", but no one expected that 300,000 demonstrators would be out in force, after over 100 days of police violence had failed to break the spirit of Hong Kongers.pic.twitter.com/xjxKWQI8mS

A government chopper was circling overhead, and at one point it decided to hover directly over the crowd for a while, to harass the event with noise. It got zapped with dozens of lasers.pic.twitter.com/EQIT8BdA6R

At every Hong Kong protest event I like to try to find the most kitted-out reporter. Tonight's winner edged out strong competition with his helmet-mounted GoPro and tactical knee and elbow pads.pic.twitter.com/vD7VT0C7ZC

By the close of the evening, the crowd had spilled into Harcourt Rd. and it was clear there would be a confrontation. Police had their fancy water cannon lit up and waiting.pic.twitter.com/0cCTdzjaDM

The water cannon came out strong, firing water with a chemical irritant and blue indelible dye. The spicy water is much worse than the tear gas; it's like breathing hot pepper mist in an unventilated kitchen. People were retching and coughing all around from it.pic.twitter.com/DLdelw9cyX

The riot police did their usual derping around the scene after the protesters left, but they went on to aggressively stop and search buses and trams elsewhere in the city. This marks another escalation for Hong Kongers, who are truly living in a police state nowpic.twitter.com/1nxH7tkOG0

As a white foreigner, I can go down into the MTR without fear of arrest. The riot police were there as usual, but there were also weird people standing around in yellow vests who were not reporters. The guy below the red sign in this photo was filiming everyone with a tripod.pic.twitter.com/Up18IvXORQ

Tonight was the Hong Kong protests in miniature: celebration, defiance, repression, evasion, escape. Everything is building towards the great protest on October 1. I am full of admiration for the courage and tenacity of people in this city. They are all heroes to me.pic.twitter.com/dT10jcd0HF

People are asking, so let me explain it: Pepe is a popular figure in protest art here, and does not have any right-wing connotations. He's a frog. I'm grateful to Hong Kongers for reclaiming Pepe, and can't wait for Monday's Pepe march. 🐸pic.twitter.com/TC6Nmh4S7Y
