What the #HK govt is calling ‘dialogue’ doesn’t fit that definition. For example, HK people had to apply to attend the session w the CE tonight. About 20,000 did. Of those, 150 are selected. Only some of those 150 will be selected to speak.

What kind of ‘dialogue’ is that? What is its point, its purpose? To me, it seems more like her highness magnanimously calling upon a handful of subjects, none of whom are representatives, to air concerns. The format is monarchical, not democratic.

Or, rather, the format is Communist. A central
#CCP precept is that an opponent should never be recognized as legitimate. & to meet an opponent is to legitimize him. So#HK govt has strict orders not to engage with protesters in any way that could be seen to legitimize them.1 reply 4 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
The occasion precipitating the ‘dialogue’ is the protests, but not once over these 3+mo has
#HK govt met anyone who could possibly be construed to represent protesters. Those are the people the govt should be holding the ‘dialogue’ w, not randomly selected members of the public.1 reply 2 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
After the Legco break-in in July, pro-democracy Legco members sent the CE a letter asking for an urgent meeting. To this day, the CE has not even replied to that letter. That is a good indication of how much the govt really values dialogue.

A reservation not infrequently raised about govt meeting the protesters is that it’s a leaderless movement, so who can the govt meet? But actually, it would be quite easy to come up with a fairly representative group:….

Pro-dem Legco members, other pro-dem political groups, Civil Human Rights Front, an LIHKG-selected group, major protest organizers, striking workers, uni student unions, secondary student strikers & religious leaders come immediately to mind. I’m sure you could think of others.

A successful initiative like the
@citizenspc shows ‘leaderless, unorganized’ protesters are eminently capable of finding representatives if need be.1 reply 3 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
That would constitute real dialogue: a meeting about protesters’ demands with a contingent fairly representative of the millions who’ve been out on the streets these past months. Anything short of that is just superficial PR & yet another attempt to dodge the real issues.

I urge media to not simply echo
#HK govt’s propaganda about ‘dialogue’. Some critical coverage about the nature of this ‘dialogue’ & how far it is from what protesters would see as constituting the real thing would be a service.1 reply 7 retweets 8 likesShow this thread
It's also important to remember what happened to the previous group of movement leaders who met with Carrie Lam for "dialogue".
