A favorite charge of police in protests so far has been 'possession of offensive weapons', which has included laser pointers & cans of spraypaint. Now police are stooping lower: 'possession of instruments fit for an unlawful purpose'-even broader: could be just about anything.

It used to be you had to actually take an illegal action to be arrested, but now you can be arrested simply for being in possession of items which others have had when they allegedly engaged in illegal acts. This- & the roadblocks- has the marks of

I think it's significant that those objects are all intended to defend against police. The police tear gas at random and now call you a criminal if you try to protect yourself or your family from its effects
