The new focus on first aiders is a big development in the Hong Kong protests, because part of their function (along with the press) has been to be a kind of noncombatant physical buffer between police and demonstrators. Making them a target for arrest will make everyone less safehttps://twitter.com/hkfp/status/1176337962423988224 …

"[W]e must emphasise, during a dispersal operation, even these self-proclaimed first-aiders must leave the scene regardless of their occupations, outfits and roles," said police Chief Superintendent Tse Chun-chung on Mon. #HongKong #China #antiELAB #hongkongprotests pic.twitter.com/3Q8jS21XnV

In the past few weeks, 'dispersal operations' have meant the police charging down streets, harassing local residents who express annoyance with them, and shutting down public transit. They have also tear gassed empty spaces with no demonstrators, for no apparent reason

In the few occasions when I've seen police in small numbers get cornered by angry demonstrators (like at Prince Edward MTR station on September 3), it's first aiders who have formed a cordon to protect them from harm.

I do not like that the police are declaring first aiders and press potential targets for arrest, at the same time as everyone in authority is emphasizing that cops may use deadly force. Someone getting killed is a nightmare scenario for Hong Kong
