personally I think quantum is like real AI -- always discussed, frequently the boogeyman, but basically impossible in *our* lifetimes, at least

That is interesting - the problem with AI is that it runs into the big questions of philosophy, which no matter how much engineers talk them down are still big and as yet insoluble. I wonder whether quantum is the same only for theoretical maths.
