The parallels between Carrie Lam and Theresa May are so interesting to me. The lack of political skill, self-pity masquerading as determination, refusal to compromise or step down once discredited. Of course, May didn't jail the few brave opponents who agreed to speak with her.

Both insist on going down with the ship that they steered onto a rock, while ignoring everyone begging them to seal the watertight compartments that would allow the ship to remain afloat, and refusing to cede the helm to someone who might give the order.

In the case of Hong Kong, it was universally acknowledged in August that agreeing to two demands—an independent inquiry into police brutality, and formal withdrawal of an already dead extradition bill—would have eased the protests. Instead, Lam made the police discredit itself

She's taking the easy path. Unless you view seeking asylum somewhere as being an easier path. Which I guess it might be.

While she did renounce her British citizenship, her husband and sons are British citizens, it wouldn't be difficult at all for her to get permission to live in the UK.
