This guarantees that what could have been a massive legal assembly tomorrow will be a massive illegal assembly, which carries a potential 10 year jail sentence to participants if police deem it a "riot". This profoundly cynical act by the police endangers the people of Hong Kong

My understanding is that this onerous riot law, along with the system of colored flags police use to warn protesters when they will shoot at them, is a relic of British colonial rule. It could have been repealed before the handover, but Britain is never thoughtful when leaving

It was substantially repealed in 1995. The first SAR government re-instated it almost immediately after the handover in 1997.
