Dear LazyTwitter: please outrage me in one tweet about putting Parliament in a pirogue or whatever it is the new PM has done. Current outrage status: low. It seems like it just removes a few days from an already endless debate. But I am ready to be very outraged! Do your worst!

Mostly I've learned that people don't know what a pirogue is. I am still not outraged! Why is rescheduling parliamentary stuff so bad? I'd understand if he had moved things until after brexit, but this just seems like it removes a few days of debate? Outrage me!

In Westminster parliamentary systems, the parliament is sovereign - it gets to make all the rules and decisions - and the government functions only to the extent that it is appointed by parliament. The PM is also part of the legislative branch & is a first among peers kinda deal
-
The PM technically leads the gov’t on behalf of the Queen, so he gets to “advise” her on certain procedural moves - one of which is ending the session of parliament. By proroguing the PM is suspending parliament to prevent a no confidence motion that would force elections

you can talk about how we have a distributed constitution rather than one written in a single place, but the core to everything about the UK is the willingness to compromise and abide by checks and balances

and the very people who were just saying that mattered more than anything just took a dump on the concepts key to our national character

Bodyline was much worse than brexit.
