There is broad consensus that granting two demands (withdrawal of an extradition bill that is already de facto dead, and an independent commission on police violence) would ease the crisis. It's hard to think of reasons not to grant those demands that aren't quite dark.

Looming over everything is the October 1 National Day celebration in China, which puts a deadline of sorts on the Hong Kong protests. The next great moments of tension in Hong Kong will be a (banned) mass protest on Saturday, and a general strike announced for September 2-3.
