David Brooks is such an incredibly lazy writer that he either doesn't notice or doesn't care about the contradictions in his own Hong Kong column.pic.twitter.com/RbFv8zF87G

No democracy graffiti or posters in Hong Kong at allpic.twitter.com/iQWj1MtH23
There are beautiful posters made daily, but these are handed out to people at protests, not posted on random walls because this is an orderly city and people are respectful
The protests do seem centered on Western culture until you go with someone who FUCKING SPEAKS CANTONESE and you have to keep asking them all the time what's so funny because of the jokes and references you're missing.
People sing Christian hymns because that was believed to exploit a loophole in Hong Kong illegal assembly laws. They mostly avoid their own protest songs because some of those became associated with past failure (though the human chain sang them)
I get that it's hard to parachute in and get context, but it's not THAT hard. And there are hundreds of wonderful writers here who could have provided that context to Times readers. Instead, they got drivel
If only there were talented Hong Kong natives fluent in English to write for the Times! But I guess we are stuck with David "Land of Contrasts" Brooks. Now let's wait for Kara Swisher's take on shutting down the Internet here
Anyway, dear Hong Kongers, please post your favorite protest poster here
