In 2014 @Pinboard coined "investor storytime" as "when someone pays you to tell them how rich they'll get when you finally put ads on your site". In prod, "metric storytime" is when we pay devs to make dashboards & alerts and pretend that if the metrics are healthy all is well

I’ve always asked people to think of a bridge, if you pay someone $100 to run across the bridge, round trip, which is more valuable, his run feedback or a dashboard showing the vast collection of sensor data like steel temp, strain, structural cracks detection, worth $50K?

if I’m answering if the bridge is usable for humans, I want his feedback every time. If I need to know if a support beam needs replacement, I’m needing the sensor data.. both save the bridge owner a lot of $ and time in the long run

I find it amusing and significant that neither one of these examples reflects how actual bridges are tested and built. I think this says something interesting about our lack of understanding about how to make things with software.

https://www.hbm.com/en/6826/bridge-monitoring-an-example-from-hbm/ … They like their sensors too :) all analogies break down. The shift to bring up a bridge is to get people thinking about how bad it is to consider software healthy from metrics alone

That said, having built foot traffic bridges at camps across rivers in my youth, there’s def. something to be said about the level of detail and planning and execution that goes into building a bridge to last.. a lot longer than most software does

*grumpily stumbles into room* I have been summoned I actually haven't yet interviewed in the civil engineers in the list, but based on what I learned talking to other engineers, it probably looks nothing like this

This topic got me thinking, when I worked for @USACEHQ the civil engineers were on a different floor than software engineers. Perhaps that’s wave of devops we need, teaching civil engineers how to code

As a software guy, a better idea is to have the civil engineers teach the coders how to build things that don't constantly break.

That's why I'm interviewing people who've done both professionally. Spoiler alert, we're more similar than we think

Is it, though? Step 1) accumulate ca. 10,000 years of experience 2) use materials, designs with properties analysable by exact analytic and/or precise numerical methods 3) apply huge safety factors 4) note that bridges of novel design, materials, or construction do break anyway.
