When I call Hong Kong a Zeroth World city, this is what I mean. I just checked my luggage at the downtown train station, got my plane boarding pass, and it all took about 70 seconds. Now I'm on high speed rail to airport, no bags in tow

It might be easier to get things like this if Americans traveled more, especially as kids. But the country is insular and growing more so. So we miss out on cool things we could all enjoy, while talking about how great we are

Jingoism doesn't just hurts foreigners, it hurts Americans. If we were willing to let go of the idea that we're exceptionally blessed, we could adopt lots of great ideas from abroad in many areas of life

I have been dreaming that the light rail in Seattle will eventually offer hourly express/thru trains from the various endpoints to/from the airport but that would still be an hour, I expect. What you speak is wizardry.

I did this in Switzerland in 25 years ago. Checked a bag in Lugano train station, boarded flight in Zurich 5 hours later, suitcase magically arrived in NY. Seoul has something similar if you fly Korean Air, including going through security in the city.

I remember buying my Octopus card at HKG and wondering how arduous the walk to the train was going to be. My only exposure to airport rail transit till then had been in the US. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the arrivals area literally opens up to the train doors.

I was so happy that I got upset. All of a sudden I could imagine what it meant for a city to put people and not cars first And I saw just how far NY has to go to get there
