On the way to the train I was able to stop for dim sum, where people's bags are kept safe in a holding area out front so you don't have to drag them to your table like every single US airport restaurantpic.twitter.com/qyUNWRxqDK

Unusually, this restaurant requires cash. In many places (like all convenience stores) I would be able to pay by touching my prepaid public transit card to a reader
The train has phone chargers for those who need them. Just try to imagine going to a NYC airport like this. You check bags at Penn station, buy a slice with your MetroCard, and are at JFK in 21 minutes. No one can imagine this
It might be easier to get things like this if Americans traveled more, especially as kids. But the country is insular and growing more so. So we miss out on cool things we could all enjoy, while talking about how great we are
Jingoism doesn't just hurts foreigners, it hurts Americans. If we were willing to let go of the idea that we're exceptionally blessed, we could adopt lots of great ideas from abroad in many areas of life
Hong Kong was paralyzed by a massive downtown match yesterday, and today is completely functional. LaGuardia takes days to recover from a rainstorm
We had that in few places in Europe for a brief while years ago (e.g. London) but I believe 9/11 changed all that
I'd say most Asian large cities hit these marks too. Even Kuala Lumpur, a city in a country Americans often think is third world (if they even know it exists) is zeroth-tier in terms of quality and ease of movement. It's impeccable.
ditto for Singapore, which is basically.. one giant city. Quite futuristic and ultra first world.
I flew HKG -> SFO last year and it felt like regressing several generations into a badly broken dystopian alternate realty.
