#HongKongProtests is not the rallies themselves (which are impressive) but when some combination of shared ideals, social media, and people on the scene is able to apply the brakes to hot, stressed, sometimes scared people in big groupsShow this thread -

i finished my march to admiralty, had my dinner and start staring at the screen until 00:10 when everyone is finally leaving. no one can predict what the frontline fighter will do, so my heart is like roller coaster-ing for straight 4 hours. 818 is a truly magical day.

I feel like half the city was staring at a screen, waiting! My hotel was near Admiralty so I went to watch. We were all so nervous about what the frontline people would decide!

In studying peaceful protest & non-violent non-compliance, I'm increasingly amazed we've left the intuitive (re-)pioneers of the past 100 years behind in our memories. Seeing passionate citizens giving in to the easy but fruitless "win" of street-action is disheartening.
