There is no way that I know of to bring a device safely in and out of China. Western journalists who do this are potentially putting sources at risk. It's a pain in the ass, but you need china-specifc devices. True also for Hong Kong

I've been traveling to and from China since 2013, no problem so far. I'd rather have my belongings destroyed than propagate the myth that individuals are powerless in the face of encroaching surveillance.

Unless you're a journalist, I have no beef with you about how you cross borders. If you are a journalist, what you are doing is unsafe.
