There is no way that I know of to bring a device safely in and out of China. Western journalists who do this are potentially putting sources at risk. It's a pain in the ass, but you need china-specifc devices. True also for Hong Kong

Also, social media needs a travel mode! https://idlewords.com/2017/02/social_media_needs_a_travel_mode.htm …

My Gmail archive has over a decade of my email. The only way to not potentially expose it on a trip abroad was to leave the password at home. The status quo for travelers is nuts

Confirm. Everyone I know that has gone to China and values their information buys a burner netbook. I know several that marked USB drives going into customs, and didn't receive the same drives on the other side.

It's absolutely possible to conceal a microSD card beyond any practical chance of detection unless they are specifically looking for one and willing to destroy your belongings to find it. Also, you can make alternate social media and email accounts and log your phone into those.pic.twitter.com/UPslYh81VE

Flew from UK to Australia and back earlier this year, both trips via Japan despite much higher cost and distance. HK just not worth the risk

Technically, you can bring a *device* safely in and out of China, so long as it is with you at all times (and dispose of it or make it the "China" phone if it left your possession ever). You can't bring *data* with the device safely, and there is no technological way to do this.

Is there a way to bring a device safely in and out of the US?

I think this depends on citizenship. For a non-US person, same advice as China
