As someone who actually grew up in HK, the US was never the model of freedom and democracy to us. Hence this makes no sense. Not sure which part of that was confusing.

I agree with Jessica. My first thought on seeing that was the same. Mainland China press has been trying to paint the protests as products of US influence and this is way too neatly convenient to that narrative.

Replying to @wooster @kangaroo5383 and
I’ll believe it’s a grassroots authentic part of the protest if there are thousands of them, but with only four people it smells fishy to me.

Ok, so your argument would then be: all 4 are completely alive and unscathed a week from now, because they’re shills for the Chinese Gov’t Is that right?

My argument is there are so many parties savvy at manipulating the media and building public narratives that I am skeptical.

Hmm. Ok, who else stands to benefit from the charade? Who else should I be paying attention to?

It’s a pretty fraught situation though and the information warfare aspect of it is incredibly sophisticated. Both the protestors and the mainland govt are making a lot of subtle moves and playing to internal and external audiences and as an outsider I don’t feel I fully grok it.

China’s main media counter is that the protest is foreign directed, it’s setting up for if they go violent they can say it’s not against their own citizen, which is how they are saving face. So it’s pretty significant to actually understand how strategically important this is

Saving face is a human universal, which creates problems when you need to point it out in a Chinese context, where it is also a cliche. But people are people!

the US also does it in their own way, in the form of some moral justification - communism vs. capitalism, imposing "democracy" on countries that may or may not want it. I think most ppl don't notice bc they are familiar w the story, it's when it's "others" it's noticeable0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
