Telegram secret chats (which disappear from the device) are also a big deal because people don't want to get their friends in trouble if the police make them unlock a phone. Having the ephemeral 1:1 chat in the same app as the giant groups and polls seems like a useful combo.

Interesting that they settled on an app that by default does not use end-to-end encryption. If it's good enough to demonstrate against oppressive regimes, that lieves little to be desired for the average Joe.
