When Usenix stops asking speakers to fucking _pay_ to attend, rather than, you know, paying them and providing child care, I’ll take shade thrown at Black Hat a little more seriously.

Making speakers from large corporations pay to fund non-affiliated speakers could do a lot to help the fact that many conferences feel like sales pitches.

That's pretty normal, isn't it? Corps sign up as a "gold sponsor" or whatever, and then they expect a few speaker slots to materialize. Maybe keynotes. Usually these "special" slots are easy enough for attendees to spot and avoid if desired.
