Whatever argument you make for why privacy will collapse if end-to-end encryption is banned has to address the fact that people use Gmail, Slack, Telegram, Facebook, SMS, banks, the IRS and many other non-e2e-encrypted services, and also that privacy collapsed a while ago.

My point is this is all a bike shed full of straw men. It's arguing morality, politics, fascism, but really the only reason which matters is technological — such a system cannot exist because it can never be made to work at this scale Because Humans.

I say it's better not to argue in those terms because it validates the bad faith statement made by Barr.
