Here's a question that's been intriguing me a while. What would be the harms of a ban on end-to-end encryption in mass-market products? People feel safe using Gmail and Telegram routinely for sensitive stuff. What argument do you have for E2E for civilians that really resonates?
My personal belief: I think the average user just thinks it's all tech magic. People's sense of privacy is very operational. If people like me are using this with no problems, it's probably safe for me. True for criminals and dissidents just as much as regular people.

I suspect at least some criminals and some dissidents put a lot more effort into understanding the actual capabilities of the software and devices they use, than Joe Sixpack does, given that they've got more on the line if they're wrong.

But, a lot of criminals do not do that, and they screw up, and they get caught. They're low-hanging fruit. Which I take as further evidence that there's no need to ban E2EE. Low-tech-savvy criminals will get caught anyway; and a ban wouldn't help you catch the really savvy ones.
