I think the most dangerous thing about the return of the encryption wars is that it conflates two things (should Officer Friendly be able to unlock your device with a warrant? Should every chat have an eavesdropping mechanism for lawful listeners?) that are extremely dissimilar

Agreed, though I think there's an interpretation that both are about mandated backdoors for legal decryption.

Another PoV: device decryption is "just" about restoring the ability for local police (with physical custody) to get your data. But by that argument, message decryption is "just" about restoring the ability to read your mail (which the post could do, historically).
