From what I know of Chinese surveillance and facial recognition, it is very heavily dependent on an array of highly trained neural networks—hundreds and hundreds of them, sitting in chairs at their workstations. But people want their cyberpunk fantasy.

Won’t speak to this *particular* situation but using laser pointers to blind cctv was talked about in the protesting workshops I attended back in the early 2000s - in the world of facial recognition and ai there’s probably more at stake
