Say what you will about a rapidly warming planet, there's going to be enough work for everyone. Miami's not going to move itself 100 miles inland using self-driving scooters!

I do mean this with all sincerity (or at least all the sincerity I can muster). If you anticipate climate change will lead to global crisis, then retooling the entire industrial economy and dealing with its impacts on poorer people will be an all-hands-on-deck effort akin to war

Oh yes, if we even get our act together to start doing that.

I mean, I don't think we will. But even that world is not one where robots and automation create a large group of underemployed people. The internal inconsistency of this belief system among otherwise intelligent people bugs me

It might create a group of underemployed people _for a time_, while the market and that group of people figure out where they are needed. That may take enough time to screw over enough people completely because of timing of where they are in their careers.

We had this dynamic happen already after NAFTA, and we had a form of UBI (Federal disability), and what it did was completely destroy communities. I think another approach (or at least one that does not ignore history like UBI) is necessary

'Oh.' Sure, I'm open to other ideas. A reverse tax structure or something? Idk, am not an economist.

Also now I'm interested in other takes using NAFTA or general free trade stuff as a stand-in for climate change/automation.
