My impression is that it’s not just warming that’s a big problem now but also volatility. I wonder if such an event/action would increase or decrease the volatility of the system…

If we had the technology, a controlled popping of Rainier, Baker, Adams, or St. Helen's could be an important safety measure. Let the pressure out and release the lahars in a safe direction.

We could achieve the same effect more cheaply with a controlled release of sulfate aerosols. Its only a matter of time til a nation state decides the long term risks if geo-engineering aren't sufficient an argument against short term relief.

Pinatubo took 0.6° off which would get us back to ~2009. Have to go big, Tambora knocked off up to 3°

It's called "geo-engineering", and the usual technoutopian suspects are all for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratospheric_aerosol_injection …

We already spray sulfate aerosols everywhere to the tune of ~0.4C of dimming. If we stopped we'd quickly (in a matter of weeks to months) get that 0.4C back!
