You can literally just go look at the 2018 exit polls in Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey and see how this argument falls apart. This is what people in Brooklyn and Chicago think, but it’s not what the Democratic coalition believes.

Every midterm exit poll asked how much Trump was a factor (answer: dwarfed by health care and economy) and whether we should impeach (answer: no we should not).

Super easy for AOC to campaign for impeachment; her district loves her for that. That is NOT what Norfolk, VA believes, and keeping the D majority means not shedding the purple suburbs.

What makes this so especially crazy is that — again — there is no chance of removing Trump through impeachment. You’d have to flip Cornyn and something like 8 other Senators _more conservative_ than Cornyn. It is pure performative politics, and unpopular, to boot.

Whether someone should be held accountable for their crimes should not depend on polls. It is crazy to me this is even something to debate, regardless of long term outcome. (And I agree with Matt in any case — i disagree with the analysis that it is a losing move)

I understand and appreciate why people believe this, but I do not believe it in this instance. Since we can’t actually remove Trump through impeachment, primum non nocere applies.

If you are right, by not impeaching, we lose an opportunity to show moral clarity to the electorate. If you’re wrong, we lose the House and start 2021 with a united GOP House, Senate, and White House.

I also think the stakes are higher than just the US, and if the US demonstrates to the rest of the world that a bunch of criminals are running the show, it will help mitigate the spread of these politics, and damage to other countries.

The rest of the world is busy with their own criminals running the show. The idea that the US serves as a political role model for anyone is a completely baffling piece of American exceptionalism.

I don't understand how you can come to that conclusion. The US serves as a template for standards (commerce, environmental, justice), culture (tv export), acceptable use of force (torture, war), and as an ex-pat Brit this has been the case my whole life I can remember it.
