The trained ground crew knew what it meant in seconds and did the right thing. I’m not sure this works as a metaphor for modern computing shortcomings.

There would have been a manual entry for it, and during the design phase the interaction of flight crew and ground crew would almost certainly have been considered as part of failure analysis.
