The debate on whether money is better spent in space or here at home should acknowledge that the spiraling cost of the Vietnam war was the main reason the space program withered after Apollo. Vietnam cost about $1T in 2018 dollars; Apollo cost $153B. Wars are expensive!

Anyway the solar system is awesome and we should explore the whole thing with robots and automated probes, with the ultimate goal of building huge space-based telescopes. Human exploration should focus on the oceans, which we have barely seen, not a vanity project to go to Mars
