I can't decide if the most wonderful thing about this is that 44% of electricity in California comes from natural gas, or that only 1,100 units of housing were built in Berkeley from 2005-2015. Either way, take that, East Bay people who like to cook!https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Berkeley-becomes-first-U-S-city-to-ban-natural-14102242.php?psid=d5jAP …

Saying this as someone who is generally very critical of Berkeley's city gov't.... this is a good thing. Gas lines cause fires due to earthquakes and, thanks to PG&E, utility incompetence. Mini-split heat pump systems are a cleaner, safer, and efficient way to heat homes.

I know nothing can replace a gas for cooking but induction isn't bad. If you really want a gas, you can use a propane burner, like millions of Americans who don't have natural gas service already do.

I don't really have a dog in the gas at home fight (other than I know it's easier/faster to cook with), but surely shipping propane tanks around on trucks is way worse for the environment than gas mains?

I think it's a once-every-few-months type of thing. It's not frequent. My guess is it's less carbon-intensive than maintaining gas distribution infrastructure. (Particularly if the gas is only being used in quantities needed for cooking, not for heating)

The great thing about fossil fuels is they have VERY HIGH energy density!

here's an image of a 26 gallon propane tank -- it's about 43 inches tall. according to the link, propane stove ranges typically use 3-5 gallons of propane per month. https://www.kauffmangas.com/blog/calculate-how-much-propane-will-you-use-per-month/ …pic.twitter.com/MUaz5heGbb

My favorite thing about this otherwise contrived tangent is that the tank pictured here is unsecured and may fall and burst in an earthquake.

amazingly enough, they don't actually fill these giant tanks with propane until they are delivered to the customer and safely secured in place!

and trust me, these suckers contain a lot less potential energy than a pressurized gas line
