In the past year, 44 new positions were added to the Trump White House staff –– and just about everyone got a pay raise. The average salary for White House employees is $99,000, significantly higher than salaries in the Obama years.https://n.pr/2jTMQbV
A dynamic I've observed personally where idealistic Congressional staff work for a few years at low salary, burn out, then level up financially to lobbying. There's some non-anecdotal stuff here https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/5/3/18311810/congressional-pay-salary-decline-andrew-hall …

Some good points, but I’m doubtful we would want to pay enough that there’s no revolving door. GWB made $400k/yr as Pres but still: https://www.politico.com/story/2015/06/on-talk-circuit-george-bush-makes-millions-but-few-waves-118697 …. Lobbying is, as you say, a level up. Corruption will a,ways be attractive.

And the implication, in the Vox article, that insider trading is just a means to boost low pay is absurd. Should congresspeople get paid enough to attract talent? Yep. Will they ever get paid enough that there’s a purely economic incentive to hold office? Nah.
