Originally, the signup fee was just an antispam measure. Later I would discover that you get way nicer customers if you charge money (you also get money!). To this day, the most unpleasant support interactions I have are from Delicious users who feel they are owed something

Also, Pinterest tried to swipe my domain name, even though they launched after me. Fortunately at the time, the pinboard-dot-com guy was an oddball European Linux zealot who refused to sell. I will never forgive Pinterest for this and I am biding my time, watching, waiting.
