We want more frequent earthquakes in California since (as you can see by your Twitter today) it really helps preparedness. In the Bay Area, this is a particular problem. We've only had two 5+ quakes since Loma Prieta, with hundreds of thousands of newcomers to the area

The last one (up in Napa) featured tearful interviews with vintners who had lost thousands of bottles of wine off of wooden shelves that didn't even have a string across them to help keep the inventory from falling off in a tremor. And these people were locals!

This is another reason Seattle is just flat-out doomed. They don't get any practice quakes, just a giant quake every 300 years to level everything. And the same holds true for other rare disasters (like big solar flares) that don't happen often enough to stay in human memory.

Mea culpa, there are a bunch of 6 and 7 magnitude quakes in the Seattle area in recent memory.https://www.tripsavvy.com/seattle-earthquake-info-2965065 …

I remember a few, but that doesn’t make me prepared in any meaningful way. The newbies think money will save them, and they may not be wrong.

I think the ideal starter quake is one that knocks a few dishes and books off of shelves. Basically the seismic version of owning a cat
