My daughter used to go to one of Brooklyn’s elite elementary schools for gifted and talented. Teachers there were in the habit of making kids stay out of the shade in summer during recess to “calm them down”. One kid was denied a bathroom pass and soiled himself.

Let me clear up some misconceptions here. These are senior unionized teachers earning about 90-120K a year with very good benefits. One might say amazing: they do not have to work during summer, spring, and winter breaks. Free or low cost health insurance.

The main reason they are untouchable is the concept of tenure. Firing one of them is next to impossible, and that is why the can get away with treating kids that way.
