The difference is consent. If I open an email newsletter, I am not consenting to send you a read receipt. When I click your link, I understand that I'm requesting something from your server.

I would meet you more than halfway and say I'd be fine if there was simple consent. I think guarantees of anonymity are hard to get right, even when everyone involved is acting in good faith. And there's no way to punish someone for lying (which is something I've called for)

No, that's not consent. Ask if you can track (in whatever way you want), and send the newsletter without tracking if the user chooses that.

We most certainly don't agree on informed consent, though, unless I'm greatly misunderstanding you. You seem to think a Google-like approach (by subscribing to this newsletter you agree to a raft of monitoring) is adequate, where I don't.
