I will say in fairness to YC (oh man, I hate to type that) that Graham left long ago and has nothing to do with this program, which aims to bring in all the people it an. But that's the legacy you have. Why not go the extra mile to make people welcome, and explain why you ask?
The explanation may be even more offensive if they, like a lot of VCs, psychologically profile founders looking for "high performance traits" using a framework built for – and by – straight cis white wealthy men.
Worth pointing out that this is startup school, which is not selective in the way the YC program itself is, but rather aims for scale.
That's fair enough. In that light, it could be they are genuinely tracking against some sort of D&I goals which are completely subverted by a lack of explanation. 
Yeah, I suspect it is some form of accidental derp on their part. But I wish they would take more care.
