CORRECTION: upthread I said Mike Conaway voted against hate crime legislation in the wake of the Orlando shooting. That is not right, his vote against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act came in 2009. My apologies for reversing time there.
Thank you for sticking with this long thread! I hope it persuades you that Google says about #pride bears little relation to its actual political giving. Many of the legislators in this thread assert that LGBTQ Americans are morally defective, and Google gives them money.
But what can you actually *do* about it? This filing comes with a full list of Google employees who donate to the PAC, most by automatic paycheck deduction. If you work at Google, you can talk to them about where there money is going. The list is here: https://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/811/201906209150154811/201906209150154811.pdf …
*Some* of the Schedule A people may not have had a lot of choice. #JustSaying
Some companies let you designate which party the donations will go to, but most do not.
I'm not aware of any tech company PAC that lets contributors earmark donations; it's all run by D.C. lobbyists. I'm curious why you think some of the donors didn't have much choice?
I’m retired from a very different industry, but remember how much choice, when you got to a certain level, there wasn’t about ponying up.
I believe you completely. But the people contributing at Google and the other tech companies are some of the most in-demand workers on the planet. That's one of the things that makes the situation so odd. They have the power to say no, but say yes.
I’m not arguing with you, but, along with VP Marketing, I saw several described as Software Engineer. Is that that high-ranking, in-demand?
Yeah. It's a weird moment in our industry when software engineers at a place like Google are incredibly high demand. It takes ~6 months to get a new hire up to speed, starting salaries are above $200K in places, hiring is long and cumbersome. They have enormous leverage.
