If history is any guide, Republicans in red states will respond to this SCOTUS ruling by gerrymandering Democrats to a fare-thee-well, and Democrats in blue states will respond by setting up a nonpartisan redistricting commission

That's the problem. Gerrymandering being defeated in red states at the same time as it's applied viciously in blue states just means Republicans getting benefits EVERYWHERE. So, NY and Cali Republicans get a fair shot, and no Dem gets elected ever again in dozens of states .

I'm not sure "we did the right thing" will feel quite as satisfying if Republicans get a permanent, veto-proof majority in the Senate that literally can't be defeated at the polls because too many races are deliberately rigged in a way SCOTUS says is unreviewable.
