Given that about two dozen of the current candidates for President are in their late 70's, and we have a year and a half before the election, actuarial prudence would dictate we let the Grim Reaper thin the field a little before arguing over who is most electable.

I apologize in advance for the inherent ageism of talking about death.

It's astonishing to me that Brezhnev, the subject of unending jokes about his senility and incapacity to rule, was only 76 when he died. Andropov then died in office at 70, and Chernenko at 74. They would be the feisty Young Turks of U.S. Congressional politics today

My favorite: Moscow, 1980. The opening ceremony of the olympic games. The stadium is packed. Brezhnev steps to the podium, looks down at the text of his speech, and cries out: O! O! O! O! O! A horrified aide rushes up to him. "Leonid Ilyich! Those are the Olympic rings!"

did all 3 not die before becoming General Secretary ? Does this not establish precedent for presidential candidates ?

Why Andropov did not make any foreign visits and Brezhnev visited a lot of countries? Because Andropov’s life support was powered fro the mains and Brezhnev’s from batteries.

Stalin was 74 and Khrushchev 77 when they died. Of course, Khrushchev was forced out at 70 (probably for drunkenness) and was the only Soviet premier to enjoy a peaceful retirement.
