This otherwise appealing theory doesn't explain why it's the leaders who work against their own promises. The dynamic in tech companies is not that a virtuous leadership gets undermined by venal employees because stock. It's that the worst behavior is consistently at the top

I'd agree with this - I've worked on sustainability/CSR issues at tech companies for >10 years and never saw compensation as inhibiting good behavior. The problem is that, despite what they say, SV companies are still companies, and at that scale

Sure, I don't mean to let leaders off the hook, as they are consistently pretty ruthless. I don't think stock is the only or even necessarily the biggest problem (corporations gonna corporate). Just a bunch of people have told me it is one of them!

My experience is that people in tech say (and believe) all sorts of things to avoid the idea that they have agency in a situation that they know makes them look bad. If it weren't for RSU's, there'd be some other compelling excuse why these ethical, virtuous people couldn't act
