I think the general consensus is road building and marketing of cars killed rail in the us.

But because the military don't like trains you hardly have any. Most of the train lines around Bristol here in the UK are heavily subsidised by the military procurement and logistics functions that they connect.

The military has a narrow and rather nasty view of the world , it is not civilised to allow that to be what dictates our destiny. Humans are capable of so much more beautiful things than murder and opression.
