One thing that I'd like to see discussed more is how Google has taken over control of setting web standards. When Microsoft tried to do this in the early days, how we fussed and hollered!https://www.zdnet.com/article/google-launches-portals-a-new-web-page-navigation-system-for-chrome/ …

In the old days, there were competitors who did a lot of the hollering. Now it's mostly "well, I don't want to do it, everything is hideously complicated now, so if they want to, I guess let them"

in fairness, they're doing it via w3c which is a cross-platform effort. they're not just blindly shipping features in their own browser with no regards for the wider standards.

if they choose to drive the narrative at w3c, and be the first to implement new features, that's up to them. others could do the same, but don't.

Oh there’s been plenty of pushback and complaints over AMP. I edit a couple of web dev podcasts and it’s definitely not something people are rolling over on.

From what I’ve heard, everyone (in the news/publishing industry at least) universally hates AMP, but they are forced to do it because google has monopoly over searches... how do we fix that last part?

Yes! I wrote a devastating tweet thread about it a while ago which sadly failed to derail the project: https://twitter.com/lukestevens/status/963905902171402240?s=20 … Managed to ask some spicy direct questions at the time: https://github.com/ampproject/amphtml/issues/13597 … & https://github.com/ampproject/amphtml/issues/13623 …. It went as well as you’d expect 😅

With the announcement of AMP stories, AMP for email, and just-build-your-whole-site-in-AMP, it's clear that these concerns are being realised. AMP is now a Google-driven metaplatform that spans the SERPs, web & email. Google forked the web.

Here's just how disingenuous the communication is around @AMPhtml. Compare @pbakaus's (AMP Developer Advocate) shall we say, creative storytelling around AMP's origin to the explanation given by one of the AMP project co-founders and creators, @cramforce.
