Dear lazyweb: can you think of any example of a company that has been able to completely safeguard a large data collection over time (millions of users for 20+ years)?

Has there been a big Apple breach? iCloud precursor .Mac started almost 20 years ago.

I’m thinking Apple, too. Though they’ve only been storing significant user data for maybe 10 years. Question is, does the iCloud “hack” count even though it was social engineering instead of Apple being hacked? I don’t think it counts, giving Apple a very good track record.

I do and I mentioned it. Was social engineering, not hacking into iCloud.

If your platform is susceptible to one person being able to spear-phish dozens of your most visible clients, you’ve been breached. You can call it what you want but at the end of the day the price is paid in customer trust

The breach happened on the user side through phishing attacks. It’s near impossible to completely eliminate that risk, and it affects pretty much every online service in existence. 2-factor auth is a possible solution but so complicated that many people don’t use it.

In other words: what happened there could happen anywhere. It’s a shared problem. But that was the only way into iCloud – unlike many competitors, no successful breach past the cloud’s security is known.

This reinforces the point I made up top. No company is able to secure a large data collection over time. It's just an empirical statement of fact about computer systems as we are currently able to build them.

If you include user error & security breaches of third-party services (like SMS) then yes, I agree.

Agree, but in that framing the data holder can’t have all responsibility. If someone has a key, fake ID, and matching signature, won’t a bank let them into your safe deposit box? Digital amplifies scale (which matters!), but it’s the same issue.

If they show up with a fake ID saying their name is Stephanie Smith from Topeka KS and they’re actually 3 cats standing on each others shoulders wearing a trench coat and fedora, the bank employee should probably call the phone number on file to verify it
