"We incurred net losses of $146.9 million, $140.1 million, and $138.9 million in fiscal years 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively." The promise of а profitable first quarter in 2054 makes Slack the hottest tech IPO of the year

It is a tribute to the New Economy that you can now lose as much money making "IRC with pictures" as you can offering taxi rides to people at a loss, or promising and then not delivering an electric car

I guess one way to run online chat at a loss is to promise almost a quarter billion dollars to Amazon. " As of January 31, 2019, the Company had a remaining minimum payment obligation of $212.5 million to AWS through July 31, 2023"

I see it more as a server-side analogue of Slack's ridiculous resource use on the desktop. Clearly they have the same people in charge of the backend.

I bet Slack’s reported $50 million AWS annual spend would be way higher if they used AWS’s RAM instead of ours.

          Replying to @Pinboard @kyerussell and

They claim 5M peak active connections. If a c5.xlarge supports 100 connections and they run at 50% utilization, that’s 100K instances. At $44.77/mo with 3yr reserved, that’s $53M per year just for EC2. Throw in the other stuff they use, apply the discount, and it adds up.pic.twitter.com/1tsCjGOF1m

100 connections per machine? One docker container per connection? That would certainly be a microservice but not even Slack is that terrible.
