Safer alternatives exist and it drives me nuts that newsrooms won't use end-to-end encrypted chat for their backroom gossip. I fear that the confidence in Slack auto-delete just encourages the behavior in the wrong direction.

On a semi-related note, I quit all my company slack rooms a couple weeks ago and I’m more productive and happy now

My final point on this is that even if Slack can defend the data they store against all state-level adversaries and correctly implement secure deletion, all it takes is one reporter getting malware to make this protection ineffective. And reporters will click anything

Also you never know what the people on the other end are doing. The next Chelsea Manning could be going to town with screenshots. If you’re in any sort of public position, it’s completely reckless to treat electronic communications as anything but public.
