For some people, abortion is a deciding issue, full stop. Others are scared of a Democratic house majority and are willing to hold their nose and vote for King to avoid it. Many aren't aware of King's special notoriety, thinking of him as a standard rural district Republican.
Many voters make excuses that come down to 'King is a good person at heart, even though he acts indefensibly sometimes'. I think it's important to give those people a gentle path away from King, and the distance will help them see him more clearly. His voters are not evil people.
